Perhaps what defines an “independent” band is the genre of their record label. On the other hand, perhaps it’s the vibe you get while listening to said band on a roadtrip through deserts and ghost towns. In a brief conversation with Murder by Death frontman, Adam Turla, after the show and off the record, “indie” was clarified a bit. Not only was the band headed on a 9 hour, sweaty van trip to their next stop, buth the band has toured with an indescriminate, eclectic mix. Turla described the bands they’ve toured with as anything from “woodsey indie rockers” to emo to punk rock. I’m a big fan of MbD’s current record label, Vagrant Records (Face to Face, Hot Rod Circuit, Alk Trio, etc. ) Check out MbD’s keyboard-driven tracks on “Red of Tooth and Claw” and Vagrant Compilation “7 Years on the Streets”
